Shaping Young Minds: Rotary Club and Oprah Students Revamp Eagles’ Wings ECD Centre

On 9th August 2023, members from the Meyerton/Henley on Klip Rotary Club, along with students from the Oprah Winfrey School, paid a visit to the Eagles’ Wings shelter. During this visit, they undertook a collaborative effort to clean, organize, and rejuvenate the Eagles’ Wings Early Childhood Development (ECD) classroom.
The combined endeavour involved tidying and arranging educational materials and toys. Additionally, they fixed any damaged furniture. A professional contractor was hired to paint the classroom walls in a bright sky-blue shade. The results surpassed mere physical changes. It also highlighted the care and dedication of the individuals who volunteered their time and affection for the Eagle Wings community’s betterment.
Eagles’ Wings serves as a sanctuary for families struggling with difficult circumstances, lacking any state funding. The shelter relies entirely on generous donations from the community.
To date, the shelter accommodates a total of 60 individuals, including 27 children. Given that state-provided education is only accessible to children aged 6 and above, younger children faces a disadvantage in terms of school-readiness. Addressing this unmet requirement, the Rotary Clubs initiated the Eagle Wings ECD Centre project. Led by Rotary member Debra Robertson, the project has evolved into an ongoing commitment managed collaboratively by Rotary club members.
The core objective of this initiative is to establish a beneficial learning environment for children under 6 years old within the Eagles’ Wings shelter. By conducting a comprehensive assessment of the children’s requirements and upgrading the physical space, the project has laid the groundwork for the next crucial step. This entails providing comprehensive in-house training to the individual responsible for overseeing the ECD centre at Eagles’ Wings.
The transformative actions of the Meyerton/Henley on Klip Rotary Club, in partnership with the Oprah Winfrey School students, reflect a profound dedication to improving lives and fostering growth within the Eagles’ Wings community.
